On 6th November 2012 the world’s largest container ship the ‘Marco Polo’, carrying the UK flag started its maiden voyage from Ningbo in China calling into Southampton on 10th December. It can hold 16,020 shipping containers measuring 20ft x 8ft x 8ft6ins. EwePack believes an average 3-bedroom house contents will fit into just one 20ft container, so that’s over 16,000 homes – or all of the possessions of everyone in West Somerset are able to be carried on one ship! If the containers from the Marco Polo were to be carried instead by rail all at the same time, the train would be over 75 miles long, or if carried by road the queue of lorries would stretch from London to Peterborough and we believe would be visible from the moon. That’s a lot of boxes! So, if you’re moving from the UK to Asia or Australasia, your goods could be travelling on board the world’s biggest container vessel.
